Usage Guidelines |
While
there really are not any guidelines for using fonts,
the tips offered below do enhance a professional website/document:
Try not to use more than 2 or 3 styles of font in
any one document or publication. If you're going to
use different fonts, make sure they're a little different
from each other. It's very difficult to tell between
certain Serifs.
Variations and effects can be created by simply changing
the spacing and placement of the text.
Don't overuse font variations like Italic and Bold.
Doing so can reduce the impact, and sometimes even
make text more difficult to read.
Choose a good size for your font in any particular
document or publication. The sizes usually vary for
each font. A 10 point Arial might look different than
a 10 point Comic Sans.

| Do
I need to send you my fonts? |
Yes,
please provide both the Screen (bitmap) and Printer
(Postscript) elements of each font used. If this is
not possible, convert your type into paths. In Freehand,
this command is "Covert to Paths," in Adobe
Illustrator use "Create Outlines" and in Corel
Draw use "Convert to Curves."

| Can
I use colored text? |
It’s
best not to colorize small text. What happens is that
all printing presses have a little bit of variance in
the consistency of the position of the different color
plates. This is called mis-registration. The cyan, magenta,
yellow and black portions of the text characters don't
line up exactly. The result is little colored halos
around the characters. It's fine to use colored text
on large, headline type, or smaller sizes down to about
12 point size, but much smaller than that will be too
noticeable. The same thing holds true for white (knock-out)
text on a dark or colored background. You can do it
but don't use point sizes smaller than about 12 point.
Otherwise the words may be hard to read and it will
look unprofessional.
