Hairline
Rule
The thinnest rule that can be printed.
Hairlines
The thinnest of the strokes in a typeface.
Half
Up
Artwork one and a half times the size which it will be reproduced.
Halftone
The reproduction of images in print by converting the image
into dots of varying sizes and density.

Image
An image reproduced by breaking down the original tone into
a pattern of dots of varying size. Light areas have small
dots and darker areas or shadows have larger dots.

Screen
In photographic color separation, a glass plate or film placed
between the original photograph and the film to be exposed.
The screen carries a network of parallel lines. The number
of lines to the inch controls the coarseness of the final
dot formation. The screen used depends on the printing process
and the paper to be used - the higher the quality the more
lines can be used.
Hanging
Punctuation
Punctuation that is allowed to fall outside the margins instead
of staying within the measure of the text. Allows visual consistency
for flush aligned text.
Hardback/Hard
Bound
A book with a separate stiff board cover. See Case Bound.
Head
and Tail Bands
Cloth ribbon pasted to the top and bottom of the spine of
the book block before casing in. Used primarily for aesthetic
purposes, but also strengthens the binding.
Helvetica
A common sans serif font.
Hickey
If a printing plate has a dust particle this will stop the
ink attaching itself to the paper which causes a mark on the
printed sheet. These marks are referred to as hickeys or bulls
eyes.
High
Bulk
High bulk refers to a paper specifically manufactured to retain
a thickness not found in papers of the same basis weight.
Originally used in book paper to give thickness to a book
with a few pages, you will also find reply cards with a 7-pt.
or 9-pt. caliper, indicating they have a lower weight for
the same bulk (caliper).`
Highlight
The lightest area in a photograph or illustration. Or, the
lightest area of a halftone image.
Hydrophilic
Water receptive.
Hydrophobic
Water repellent.
