Imagesetter
An imagesetter is basically an extremely high quality digital
printer. Imagesetters are used to create the film in computer-based
pre-press operations. In process color work, the imagesetter
creates the separated output film by "printing"
the image four times (once each in Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and
Black).
Imposition
The layout of pages on a sheet to achieve the correct order
of pages after folding.
Impression
Product resulting from one cycle of printing machine.
Impression
Cylinder
The cylinder of a printing machine which brings the paper
into contact with the printing plate or blanket cylinder.
Imprint
The name and place of the publisher and country where printed
required by law for a publication. Sometimes accompanied by
codes indicating the quantity printed, month/year of printing
and an internal control number.
Ink
Cover
The percentage of the page that is to be covered with ink
(this includes text and pictures/graphics). A visual estimate
is adequate.
Ink-Jet
Printer
A monochrome or color page printer which produces images by
firing heated droplets of ink at plain or specially coated
paper. Modern color ink-jet printers are very inexpensive,
and surpass the definition and color accuracy of color laser
printers. Image quality can be near-photographic. The major
drawback of older consumer ink-jet printers is the poor durability
of the inks, which tend to fade in sunlight, can bleed over
time due to humidity, and are ruined by exposure to water.
Inserts
Extra printed pages inserted loosely into printed pieces.
Interleaves
Extra blank pages inserted loosely into book after printing.
Intaglio
Printing
Methods of printing involving the image being etched below
the surface of the plates or cylinders.
ISO
International Standards Organization.
ISO
Paper Size
The International Standards Organization (ISO) system of paper
sizes is based on a series of three sizes - A, B and C. Series
A is used for general printing and stationery (A4 is the international
standard letter size, and is longer and narrower than US Letter;
A3 is twice A4 and comparable to US Tabloid size, etc.), Series
B is for posters and Series C is for envelopes.
Italic
Type with forward sloping letters. See oblique.
Ivory
Board
A smooth high white board used for business cards, etc.
