T

Tabloid
A page half the size of a broad sheet, or twice the size of a letter sheet.

Tack
In printing inks, the property of cohesion. A tacky ink has high separation forces and can cause surface picking or splitting of weak papers.

Text Stock
The paper on which the text of a publication is printed, i.e. the pages of a book.

Text Type
Typefaces used for the main text of written material. Generally no larger than 14 point in size.

Thermography
A print finishing process producing a raised image imitating die embossing. The process takes a previously printed image which, before the ink is dry, is dusted with a resinous powder. The application of heat causes the ink and powder to fuse and a raised image is formed.

Thin Space
The thinnest space normally used to separate words.

Thirty-Two Sheet
A poster size measuring 120in x 160in (3048mm x 4064mm).

Times
A common serif font.

Tint Laying
The process where line colors are created by mixing together in varying weights the four process colors.

Tinting
Contamination of the dampening solution by ink which transfers to the non-image area of the printed sheet.

Tints
Tints are different percentage weights of the same color, e.g. 100% yellow and 20% yellow. The tint will be a lighter shade of the same color.

Tone Line Process
One process of producing line art from a continuous tone original.

Tranny
(See Transparency)

Tooth
The quality of paper that causes it to take ink readily.

Transparency
A positive full color photographically produced image on transparent film. Also referred to as a "tranny" or "slide." Most often 4cm x 5cm in dimension.

Trapping
The removal of small gaps in ink coverage between two or more adjacent colored objects. When two objects of different color are butted against each other, a small white or other color gap can sometimes appear even if the films and plates are in near-perfect register. To avoid these gaps, an overlap between the objects is sometimes created,. The color of the overlap is selected to minimize the visual effect of the overlap, and yet fill the Trap space as necessary.

Trim Marks
Marks placed outside the image area to indicate the edge of the sheet for trimming.

Twin Wire
Paper which has an identical smooth finish on both sides.

Trimming
Cutting a sheet to the required size. Sheets are trimmed on a guillotine.

Twin Wire Stitch
The saddle stitch, or twin wire stitch, is the process of securing pages by wire staples through the collated sections of a book or leaflet.

Typeface
A set of characters, alphanumerical, punctuative and/or symbolic, generally matching in style. An example is Helvetica Bold. Groups of related typefaces can make up a font, such as Helvetica, which includes roman, bold and italic faces.

Typescript
A typed manuscript.

Typo
An abbreviation for typographical error, an error in the typeset copy.
